It makes me unbelievably sad to think about Keyz. I feel guilt. I feel pain. I feel overwhelmed. Even when I think of the great times, I think like what could’ve been now if he was still alive. I blame myself for him not being here and I know I couldn’t have done anything differently. I still miss Keyz…..

African American is a specific ethnicity. Not everyone who is black is African American.

People need to get that.

I just had this argument with my homeboy last week.

Can somebody explain this to me please? I understand this, but at the same time I don’t. I understand that if somebody was born in Ghana, but their child was born in America,…

African American was specifically coined for those who are descendants of the enslaved West Africans brought to the US during the slave trade.

The name was created because those who are descendants of the enslaved typically cannot identify ethnically with their ancestors. The enslaved West Africans that were forced here came from various lands and varied ethnically, linguistically, culturally. African American specifies those who have historically been in the US for hundreds of years.

Ethnicity is based on commonality of national origin, language/dialect, ancestors, homeland, history, food, and other traditions.

For instance, Haitian (nationality) can also be considered an ethnic group just as Italian-Haitians, Syrian Haitians, Chinese -Haitians. They are all ethnic groups.

African American and Gullah a specific ethnic groups in the US.

Being Black in the US doesn’t equate to African American because not everyone considered to be “Black” in the US can identify with African American history, traditions, language, culture, beliefs, cuisine, etc.

For instance, Ghanaian immigrants and their children will be considered Black in the US, however they are still ethnically Ghanaian (For instance Akan or Ewe). Haitian immigrants and their children will be considered Black in the US however they are ethnically Haitian.

If I were to move and have children in Ghana, nationality wise my children would be Ghanaian, ethnically they would still be African American.

(I hope I explained that well)

It is just a way for those will similar histories and traditions to connect with each other.

Been saying this.

Its crazy how I still have dreams about this certain person from my past…. But this one in particular is even more bizarre seeing as the dream came on the anniversary of me meeting said individual. I can go days, weeks, even months without thinking about them and then something happens to remind me of what was and bring back questions about what could have been……..
